About Us

(DRAFT)
This is an organically assembled group of STEM leaders in the DMV (District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia) focused on STEM education opportunities, communications and collaborations for under-resourced and under-represented communities.

The Goals of our DCES-DMV STEM ecosystem include the following:

  1.  Increasing opportunities and the awareness of opportunities for students in technical careers and college majors;
  2. Sustainability and knowledge transfer;
  3. Increasing communications and collaborations rather than duplicating existing programs;
  4. Identify companies and industries that are engaged, and not-yet engaged in school partnerships;
  5. Helping schools make the most of business, industry, and non-profit partnerships; and
  6. Making technical work-based learning more efficient.

Current priorities (Summer 2020) include:
  1. Create an Advisory Council representing higher education, business, K-12 schools, and teacher and student groups;
  2. Find ways to get attention at a time when the public discussion is overwhelmed by arguably bigger, more important issues;
  3. Use the survey the TIES team provided for sharing needs and resources;
  4. Present our opportunities and partnerships as community solutions, and even mental health, within these larger concerns and initiatives. Welcome additional groups that will facilitate our goals;
  5. Connect mentors to support seniors’ capstone projects (this year and next) through science and technology professional organizations; and
  6. Tips, strategies and training for Mentors helping those students who need the most help!  Complement field trips with mentor trips to the schools. Have mentors tell their stories.
